The areas we visit during the game are often shrouded in darkness to evoke a sense of constant tension in the player. The developers wanted to render the realistic look of World War II Tuscany as much as possible.
Martha is Dead runs on modern Unreal Engine 4 and uses advanced texturing and ray tracing techniques. It is based mainly on the exploration of both open and closed locations, interacting with elements of the environment, analyzing clues and solving puzzles that will allow us to get closer to the truth about Martha's brutal murder. In terms of gameplay, we are dealing with a classic adventure game. In addition to a strong emphasis on a dark, gripping storyline with folkloric elements and a touch of fact, the game touches on difficult themes of loss, suffering, and dealing with the psyche after traumatic events. We play the role of Martha's twin sister, who, struggling with the trauma of losing a loved one, tries to solve the mystery of the crime. The war, however, is only the background of the story, because the main plot revolves around mysterious murder of the title Martha, daughter of a German soldier, whose desecrated body is found one day. The game takes place in Tuscany in 1944, during the height of the conflict between the German and Allied forces. The main focus is on exploration, solving puzzles and presenting a suspenseful story which is a mixture of fiction and fact. The game was kept in the same convention and belongs to the genre of first-person adventure games. Martha is Dead is another, after The Town of Light, psychological thriller by Italian studio LKA.
